Former Campers

Names Have Been Changed:

I would like to share my sincere appreciation for the wonderful impact Royal Family Kids Camp had on one little boy.

Johnny was placed in my home for foster care at 2 days old. He was with me until he was 14 months old. After efforts to reunite him with his birth mother failed, he was adopted by his grandparents. I continued to have a positive relationship with Johnny and his family.

When Johnny was 8 1/2 his Dad (in his mid/late 50’s) passed away from cancer.

Just before his 10th birthday his mother passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart attack. There were no appropriate or committed family members to provide a home  for him, so even though I was no longer a licensed foster home, he was placed with me, under court guardianship due to his lifelong relationship with me. The impact of these major losses for Johnny manifested in a very sad, angry, and confused little boy. he had difficulty trusting adults, and no longer had any sense of safety and security. Although he felt safe and secure with me, he knew that due to my age, I was not a long term option for him.

That summer Johnny was privileged to attent Royal Family Kids Camp. He went under protest, but after camp declared, “it was the best week of my life”. When I picked him up after camp, he cried because it was over! The things he got from camp are among his greatest treasures. For weeks he was permanently connected to the music from camp! I believe that one week, had a life-changing effect on Johnny, spritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. This happened because of caring, loving, giving, and committed people. I witnessed an amazing change in Johnny, and his ability to not only give love and affection, but to accept it.

I am very happy to report that Johnny was adopted, last fall by a wonderful, loving family, and that he is doing very well. I believe that this is in no small part, thanks to his camp expierience at Royal Family Kids.

I spent 40 years as a Social Worker and know that we often wonder if we make a difference in the lives of these precious and sometimes troubled children, but I wanted to let you know, that I Know for sure, that the staff from Royal Family Kids Camp made a huge difference in the life of one little boy.

Here’s a quote from Regina, one of our Camper Alumni:

I ran across a girl who posted on her Instagram that she volunteered at the Royal Family Kids camp recently, and it reminded me of when I attended. When I was little I had no idea it was a camp for abused children, I just thought it was a camp that my adopted parents wanted to send me to just have fun for a week. I remember always being scared when first getting there due to the fact that I didn’t know anybody. But once I got off that bus, we were always greeted by our leaders with signs with our names on them. I remember the love and hugs our counselors greeted us with, I remember the activities (dressing up, tie dying shirts, building bird houses, playing basketball, the talent show) I remember one year I was picked to light the torch, I remember a lesson on God knowing the amount of hairs on our head, and I was picked to count the hairs on a person’s head! J  I remember getting t-shirts, and cassette players and I even remember the theme song (and our water bottles had the theme song on them) it’s crazy that it’s been 7+ years and I still remember everything about the camp, that’s how much its impacted my life. I am now 21 years old with a son, our own place, and with a great job for my age! I started working for the court house at age 19 and joined the Juvenile Service Department. I’m going to school, majoring in criminal justice I have only 1 year left. I’ve grown so much, but one thing I won’t forget or grow out of….are the memories of the Royal Family Kids Camp!
